from the sounds of the thread so far, it sounds like you are off to a great start! Also sounds like you might've talked to Philips with regards to club structure. I'll say if it hasn't been said already that the Des Moines Disc Golf Club will be more than happy to share our current bylaws, to give you a starting point for creating your own.

I think that your next step would be to have a public meeting (forum) where people can express their interest in a new club, or even interest in leadership positions. You should do it before the weather gets nice!

I think it's important to have goals, if you're going to have a club. So my advice would be (once you have established a club) to set some realistic goals, and begin achieving them. This will provide your new club with a powerful sense of acomplishment:

Of course, each and every goal that you come up with will have lots of items that have to be achieved to reach the goal. A club can use its resources (people) to get things done. Let's say for example the goal is to improve courses. A club can organize worknights, provide incentives for members to come help out, host a fundraiser to raise money for needed equipment or materials, etc.

Don't hesitate to ask your fellow disc golf clubs for advice if you run into any bumps in the road. Kudos for all the efforts guys! It's heartwarming to see people wanting to give back to the sport.

You're correct Jay, I did pick Philips' brain on this. I wanted to know a little more before I started this thread. He sent me some great information. Thanks for the encouragement and offer for help, too. I'm sure we'll need it at some point.

I'm also interested in joining. I would plan on attending any work night that is scheduled, as long as it works with my schedule.

I could defiantly see myself giving 2-4 additional hours of time per week doing whatever else I can do. I'm not very tech savvy and would not be able to lead any kind of course work. But I would be comfortable dealing with some of the 'paper and pencil' type work, whatever that may be.

I'm excited about this, and hope the ball keeps rolling.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not afraid of public speaking, and I would love to help in any way possible. Like gp said, I was on the courses 7 days a week this last summer, and am more than willing to use 1 or more of those to help improve the courses. I have found my addiction to this sport growing every single time I throw a disc.

I would like to hear from more local players who frequent this site and get more feedback.[/quote]

This comment is still true, we need to give more time for response, but we also need to talk to the players you know that may not be on this site. See if they are willing to be a part of this. Let them know something is in the works and to stay tuned. I don't think we want to recruit a lot of new members until we get structured, we should be able to handle it easier then.
Once we reach out a little more, I think we can go ahead and set up an informative meeting date. I will make copies of information I have recieved and distribute those to everyone in attendance. I am also going to create a "member profile" sheet which you all can fill out. It think it should include your name, home & e-mail address, PDGA #, maybe what you feel your involvement in the club could be. This will be a good start to the data base we will need eventually. Plus, we can communicate easier through an e-mail network instead of the message boards here.

I think the main topic of discussion at the first meerting should be who is going to be in the leadership roles. Once that is established, all our roles can be better defined.

Club informative meeting date set:

Tuesday, January 26th @ 7:00 PM.
Starlight Room (meeting room in back)
3300 1st ave. N.E.

I'd like to see a good turnout for the first discussions.
Bring some positive ideas and enthusiasm.

And to show you how dedicated I am to this, and knowing how most of you can be bought, I'm buying the pizza!
