The trip lived up to some lofty expectations. The courses were immaculate and in very good condition outside of the sogginess which cannot be helped.
Friday Discin': Started at Big Creek and were the only ones on the course. Very nice tight technical course to start and really neat holes near the lake to finish. 'The Freak' was pretty fun to play. We ended up playing 2 rounds here based on the little traffic. Skipped over to Walnut Ridge for our 3rd round of the day. Course was pristine with great signage and layout. Highlight of my round was a deuce on #16 from about 275' out. Loved the variety of shots here.
Friday Night: Started the night at Court Ave Brewery. The beer was outstanding. Had 2 flights just to sample the wares and they were all super tasty. Ended up trying the cider and wasn't a huge fan but overall the food and beer were awesome. Headed over to People's to play a little foos which was pretty fun. After that we headed to the 2nd floor bar there, down from Peoples. I was far too looped to remember the name. It was pretty packed. At some point I went outside for a heater and ended up just staying out there and talking to a ton of random people on the street that were all pretty damn cool. Drunken conversations are always fun.
Saturday: Started the day at Pickard and we all fell in love with the course. Just so many holes that you just haven't seen before. So very unique with a lot of your shots and the use of space is great. Seems like you could almost have another full course on that land it's so spacious. Loved #8 & 14. Headed to Tasty Taco's after Pickard and I think only 2 of the 6 enjoyed it. I thought it was very good but the rest of the crew were not impressed. Anyway, headed to Ewing after this. I think this was our consensus favorite course actually. Very unique holes and a good mix of varying shots. #10 is to die for, especially this time of year. I still have that intoxicating smell near the pin in my brain. Ended up playing shorts for round 3 instead of running over to Grandview because we wanted to get back for the Celts/Bulls Game 7.
Sunday: Headed over to Grandview to play a couple rounds at a shorter course. This plays a lot like a shorter Riverside in St Cloud where a bunch of us went to school so we all liked it. Nice mix of shots and easy to play casual rounds here. Great signage too. bdhukr, which one were you? We ran into a bunch of friendly folks actually. This was actually the only course that had legitimate traffic on the weekend really.
Overall it was an awesome weekend. Ewing, Pickard & Walnut Ridge all immediately jumped into everyone's top 10 courses played which is pretty crazy. We were super jealous that you guys have as many gems as you do so close to the metro area. Anyway, it was a great weekend and we're already considering repeating in DSM next year instead of continuing our rotation of Midwest locations. That's how hospitable and fun you guys were. Your course maintenance, helpfulness and overall experience were second to none. Honestly, hats off fellas.
