What is the minimum setup I need to have external speakers?
Please speak like I'm a 3-year old, and define all terms, as I don't know ANYTHING about amps, dolby, surroundsound, woofers, 3.1, 5.1, 27.1, theater, or anything else. And I really don't care to learn. I just want my sound coming out of external speakers, and I want to pay the minimum price for it.
Since it is unamplified, you need an external amplifier.
Minimal setup is to have amplified speakers, like PC speakers, either with a subwoofer, or just 2 piece. Is there just one audio out jack? If so, you just need to plug the cable from the speakers that would normally plug to the back of your PC, to the TV plug. You may need a coverter from RCA jack to mini plug. If there are two outputs, you will want to buy a 3 way splitter, that has two plugs for the back of the tv leading to one mini plug. Radioshack or bestbuy have all of these things.
To get more fancy, you need to have an amplifier with audio input, and speaker output. In that case, you will have two inputs on the amplifier, so if there is one output on the tv, you need a splitter that goes the other way, likely one RCA to two RCA jacks. If there are two outputs on the set, you only need single ended cables from the TV to the amplifier input.

RCA to mini splitter picture....EDIT
oops, put a picture of the wrong splitter. You would likely need male RCA ends leading to a female mini jack (sorry, I'm not going to teach sex ed to a three year old, so you'll have to ask your wife) FYI, I had trouble finding one of these, so I had to use a male to male and get an additional converter plug.
