Disc Gator retriever vs. Golden Retriever

Postby KePP » Fri Apr 11, 2014 10:03 am

Ordered one of the new Disc Gators. Price was kind of steep ($50 for the two pole version with shipping) - but knowing how many times I've used my golden retriever, they pay for themselves pretty quickly. More often than not it helps out someone else in your group.

Looks like it could be a hassle to carry around, but I used to carry around a modified golf ball retriever which was similar, just missing the clamp, at Vista del Camino where there's lots of water and discs are generally retrievable (not as much the case in Iowa). Since I don't have a backpack style bag, I'll have to get inventive on carrying it (it comes with a mesh bag with clips, for that purpose).

The golden retriever will probably still be necessary for some situations like when I land in middle of Duck Creek. But I always hate unwinding (and re-wrapping) the whole golden retriever for short retrievals, and can definitely waste some time casting that thing out. You could wrap the cord around something other than the retriever, that way you don't have to unwrap the whole cord. But I don't. I should.

I'll try to remember to post feedback once I use it.

if I have a visual on the disc I am 100% with my golden retriever, I would choose that for ease of carrying alone

retriever do to carrying ease....I've solved the cord problem by taking a 1x2 the same length, boring a hole thru it and shaving off the sides, I wind the cord around the stick and unroll only what I need when I need it
A mind is like a parachute.....it doesn't work if it isn't open!

Cut string in 1/2. Attach 1/2 to retriever. That will reach most discs. Keep other 1/2 in bag. Tie together to reach discs farther out. Untie and store when done. Saves unwinding full length every time.

That's what I need to do.
And you're right about ease of carrying - carrying those poles is a PITA. Disc Gator is an item to store in the trunk and break out just for certain courses or grab it after the round to go back and retrieve.
