2nd Annual Disc for a Cure 10/5

Postby DLCdisc » Mon Jul 22, 2013 5:08 pm

For those brave few that remember, I put together an event last year to benefit Huntington's Disease Society of America. The weather was terrible, but we still managed to raise a good chunk of money for the cause. The backstory on this is simple. There is a close friend of my family that has been diagnosed with the disease and has lost more than one family member to this disease. I love disc golf and have enjoyed running events the past few years, so this seemed to be the best way for me to help out. Here is the plan:

Format (subject to modification):
One round participants will play singles and will be flighted after the round is finished.
Full event participants will play doubles both rounds
First round (Summerfest tourney layout) -- best score (each playing the hole out and taking the lower of the two scores)
Second round(Safari Layout) -- best shot

Disc For A Cure
Saturday, October 5th
Heritage Park - Ankeny, IA
Non-Sanctioned Trophy Only Event
Side Action Available
$10 per person for one round participants (Ace fund included)
$20 per person for two round participants (Ace fund included)
Food available between rounds, silent auctions, raffles, and games TBA

I will finalize the start times (probably 9:00am first round) once I finalize the format.

If you have anything you would like to contribute as a prize PM me or call me

Had no intention of conflicting with another event and did check with Clue before posting anything. Sorry Kurt -- didn't see your Marshaltown post before I put mine up.

Will update as soon as new date is confirmed.

No problem. I looked at the main schedule in the Iowa tournament thread and there wasn't anything on that date so I emailed Clue to see if it was open. Stuff happens and as I said I had no intention of interfering with anyone's already scheduled event. Maybe I can make it to Marshaltown.

New date for the event will be Saturday, October 5th.

I am working on a flyer and details for charitable donations as well. I will post that really soon. Checks for the event alone will probably be made out to me and I will give them one check for the event. Donations directly to the cause Will probably be made out to HDSA, but I will check and post that as well.

A lot of events going on in the state coming up and I don't want to steal another event's thunder, but let me review briefly why I am running this event to support Huntington's Disease:

HD is a catastrophic, degenerative brain disorder that devastates families for generations. As HD slowly diminishes one's ability to think, eat, talk, walk, and reason, they become entirely dependent upon others to complete the simplest of daily tasks. Eventually the weakened individual succumbs to death from pneumonia, heart failure or other complications. Symptoms typically appear in the prime of one's life between 30 and 50 years old. After the onset of HD, the average life expectancy is only 10-20 years. Children who develop juvenile HD rarely live to adulthood. Currently, there is no effective treatment or cure for HD.

There is more and more sad and eye opening information that I could put down here, but the bottom line is it hits close to home when a good friend gets diagnosed with the disease. He has lost family members to it is challenging to keep spirits high. Last year with only about 15 players we were able to raise about $700 for the whole event. That may not seem like much in the grand scheme of medical research, but to my friend and his family and the Iowa Chapter of HDSA it was HUGE!

Come on out and enjoy some disc golf, raffles, food, and auctions for a good cause.

Course is in really good shape and I am getting a lot of people planning to be there. Details are coming along nicely. Still looking for last minute sponsors and donations, so if you have anything to contribute, just let me know.

Just a couple of reminders on this event:

1. There are two options for playing in this:
A. Can't make it all day -- come on out and do the singles / single round format for only $10 and grab some food on your way out.
B. Bring a partner for dubs and have some fun with the unique modified safari layout in the second round. If you want to play and need a partner, let me know or post on here and we will try to get you one.

2. This should be a fun event for a great cause.

Hope to see you all out there. Let me know if there are any questions.

Looks like a chilly start Saturday morning, but looking forward to it anyway. I will bring out the firepit to keep HQ warm during registration, and by the time we hit the safari layout for the second round it will be comfortable.

I know I have been pushing two events at once and there is stuff going on all over (mensuration!!!! ), so I am not expecting huge numbers on Saturday. If you are planning on coming out let me know on here, by text 249-2454, or by email culverdamon@yahoo.com and tell me if you are playing one round singles or two round dubs.

Thanks,
Damon
