Visiting Des Moines area For Turkey Day.

Postby superq16504 » Mon Nov 22, 2010 11:58 pm

I have never made it to Des Moines , Played Graceland for the first time this summer so I am looking forward to more Iowa golf (in the cold ) . I have been told Big Creek, Pickard, Walnut Ridge, and Ewing would be the 4 Courses not to miss. Just looking for the local input so I can plan my golfing asap. I would sure appreciate any insight and if there may be any local play Friday or Saturday ( I saw the FAT thread and , same thing I would be planning if I was home!)

Thanks and if there is a gem out there please let me know!

sweet, I think I will try to play Ewing and maybe pickard Friday and hit the tourney Saturday! Is walnut ridge closed to play, I don't understand the walk in bit I guess? If that one is playable I defiantly want to check it out!

the park is technically closed. but you can park on a side street next to it and walk into the park to play.

it is closed for the season but we usually park on the residential road just north of entrance and walk in and start on hole 8

Here's a little tidbit I put together on DGCourseReview for a fella heading to DSM.

Single L wrote:While the South Side Combo of Pickard and Ewing is a must, I'm one that also believes the North Side Combo of Walnut and Big Creek is a must. While Grandview is a very fun and enjoyable course it just isn't as easily played in conjunction with another course (and is the 5th best course in the area IMO ...... its not played in the A-Tier, the other 4 are).

As far as playing Walnut Ridge it is quite easy. You simply park in the neighborhood to the north of the entrance road and walk about 600ft to hole #8 or #16 tee and start from there. One of the perks off playing Walnut in the off season is the lack of other players ...... you usually have the course all to yourself. It should be noted that its not frowned upon to play in the off-season ..... I played there last week and shot the crap for a few minutes with the park ranger who was driving around doing some final winterizing ...... he said it was all good.

The easiest place to park is on Eagle Crest Dr in front of the vacant lots. Lots of guys park on Eagle Pointe Dr because it is the first drive when you approach Walnut, but the problem is you walk through peoples yards (a big no no if you want them to allow us to play in the off season). So I park on the north road and walk through the vacant lot to the park road and walk the whole 600ft it takes to get to either tee.

That is sweet! Ok I think I am going to skip walnut ridge this time unless there is any interest in meeting up and shooting it with someone local. I know the holidays make me want to get out there and throw. If anyone wants to play Friday shoot me a message and we can figure out times.

Thank you all, this has been way more informative than I ever expected.

Which reminds me I was also told some of the parks are NON-SMOKING... I assume those are marked like Graceland (Thank goodness for the personal vaporizer!)

They cant really enforce it out on the course tho...Just pick up your butts and they will never know. Only place youll get caught is in the parking lot. Just claim ignorance
