Legion Disc Golf Course

Postby AO » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:44 am

Trish just posted this..

Heads up, Legion Park disc golf fans. The course's future is questionable, as the City of Marion has tentative plans to cede the land at the top of the hill to influential real estate developers to correct a surveying mistake that put the park's bike trail onto private property. Without the holes at the top of the hill, the course is cut in two, and leaves us access only via a long hike from the parking lot to the back course. The public meeting of the City of Marion Parks Department is next Wednesday, June 13th, at 4 p.m. We're trying to get on the agenda and access the Park Dept.'s unpubliished meetings from the last 4 months of previous meetings. Fans of the Thomas Park sledding hill may be interested in finding out what the city's plans entail, as well!

Can a rep from Cedar Rapids parks deptartment come to this? There was talk of having an A tier in Cedar Rapids. I would expect this to be played at Legion and Shaver. I would think that removing half the course would put a major dent in the plans of having an A tier. Just a thought.

The A tier was not going to be played at Legion. It is an open forum meeting of the Marion Parks department.

I am certain that if we posted this on DGCR we would get a billion signatures from out of towners. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

The funny thing is that the land the park put the trail on is about worthless. You can't build there. I don't see why the owner couldn't work something better out than taking the current park land. There's plenty of land to put apartments up on.

Because the city sees getting 4.687 acres of his land for 1.305 acre of the park as a good trade; city's just want acres of park land, not caring what its value is. The developer sees giving up more shit land to him for a smaller chunk of land with a prime wooded view as a huge win. Good deal on both their parts if thats how they're thinking. Disc golfers, Mt bikers, sledders, and other park users are the causalities. If it goes down this way they'll spin it that while they lost some assets they are expanding the amount park space; neglecting to add that it will be relatively usesless green space
