I've joined a charity running team that will be running in the IMT Des Moines Marathon on October 16. This charity benefits Cystic Fibrosis research, something that is important to my family as I have a cousin whose child has CF.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
- clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and
- obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
It's nasty stuff. I've taken a stance against it. I have a personal goal to raise $500 and I've started it off with $50 of my own.
Please consider making a tax deductible donation. It doesn't have to be a huge amount. $5 would be awesome.
