big tournament

if there was a big 2 or 3 day tournament with big payouts (like a 1000 for the winner) who would all be interested in participating?

Take a look at pdga.com and look at the past big events in the area (First Class Challenge, Legion of Doom, River Cities Rumble, Minnesota Majestic), and you'll have a real good idea of who would be interested.

If you have a sponsor, my suggeestion would be that you hook up with the tournament director of one of the events I listed above and work with them to make one of those events bigger and better, rather than watering down the market farther than it's already been (i.e. adding another tournament). There's too many events IMO, but plenty of events that need better/more sponsorship. You could also look through other Iowa events, and pick one that could be made bigger. (My suggestion for that alternative would be the Des Moines Open or Iowa State Championships.)

I was thinking about trying to make some events bigger too. My main goal would be to first get as many players as possible, promote the sport as much as we could, maybe a clinic one of the days to get kids into, have some big pay outs, then have a party for the awards where we got a bar serve up some good bbq with some good music, and then try to make it bigger or at least better every year. Figured if we got big enough payouts and then top it off with excellent food at the end we might be able to draw many people from other states. I do agree with making a tournament bigger since there are a ton of tournaments already.

You just pretty much described the First Class Challenge.

I'm talking bigger though with bigger payouts or more prizes for amatuers. Just wondering if we have it bigger with 4 figure payouts if we can get several hundred players and who all would be interested in it.

Do some research. The First Class Challenge has four figure payouts.

If you want to attract more players (esp. from out of state) and have bigger payouts then the Challenge, you're gonna have to offer way more than a 1000 to the winner. As well as have several good-great courses available to fit everyone on. There are big tournaments every weekend that offer close to that amount of cash, that have been going on for years, and it will be tough to draw players from them. Your best bet is to add to an already existing tournament to make it bigger and better, rather than starting from scratch. The biggest turnouts in Iowa and close by, would be the Challenge, L.O.D., and The Rumble...There may be a few that I'm missing, that get similar turnouts tho.

Man you guys are taking the fun out of just polling who would be interested in playing in a big multi-day tournament held in iowa...plus I didn't think first class challenge had 4 figures yet but then again I could've been looking at the wrong thing. I am talking about going bigger then the challenge or adding on to a big tournament be nice to get 4 figure payouts for the top 5-10 spots. I know it's all a long shot but we can toy with the idea couldn't we?

Yeah, you're not looking in the right place. As long as I've been around, the Challenge has offered close to 1200 for first place in Open. As far as polling, you would get a lot of people interested. I would be one of them. You could have put in an option for a poll in the thread if that's all you were trying to get outta people....

And the only kind of event, like you're describing (with multiple 4 figure payouts) would be Worlds, and that would attract several hundred people. 98 % of all discers would be interested in a tournament/payday like that...

Yeah but having comments is more fun then just having a poll plus I'm new to these forums. You think we could hold that big of an event in central iowa? Even if we had to put in a could temp courses.

The biggest thing would be getting numbers and just actually playing disc and having a good time over the weekend. The big payouts would be just a bonus.

Worlds was here in DM in 04'. Its still talked about as one of the Greatest Worlds ever. The powers that be, have toyed with hosting another..As of now it wouldnt be possible for a few years. And it takes a lot, and I mean a lot of work to get that in order. Someone will know better than I, but I think it requires a minimum of 10k added cash. Courses... we have enough to host
